Introduction

The department of Medical Oncology / Haematology presently caters to patients who suffer from benign and malignant haematological diseases.

Patients with malignancies of hematolymphoid system like Acute and Chronic Leukaemias, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma, MPN,MDS and also patients of benign haematological diseases like Anaemia, Aplastic Anaemia and other marrow failure syndromes, Thalassemia, Haemophilia , platelet disorders and other bleeding disorders receive treatment in the OPD and IPD of haematology department.

Treatment of haematological diseases specially haematological malignancies with chemotherapy and novel agents are costly and put enormous burden , not only on the family but on the society as well. Here our aim is to provide treatment which would be affordable even to the economically weaker sections of the society.

Haematology-related diseases contribute substantially to global mortality and morbidity. Among the haematological malignancies NHL is the most common (with incidence rates of around 2.9/100,000 population in India), followed by leukaemias and multiple myeloma. Even severe forms of Aplastic Anaemia and hereditary diseases like β-thalassaemia are prevalent in this part of the country. Treatment of all these diseases requires considerable effort on the part of government and private establishments.
